Journey to Sheep’s Head

We were sad to leave Louisburgh, but at the same time, we were excited to see more of Ireland! We rented a car to drive along the western coast to make our way down to our next stop: Sheep’s Head. The trip was, of course, jawdroppingly beautiful; however, a majority of it was very bumpy and curvy. I had to take dramamine, which knocked me out, and that was too bad because Brandon filled me in on what I had missed.

Along the way, we stopped at the famous Cliffs of Moher. Princess Bride fans know this place as the Cliffs of Insanity! I had always wanted to see these and I’m so glad that I tolerated the longer route. They were so majestic and beautiful! They have a really nice visitor’s center with cafes. They have nice stairs and sidewalks to hike up to better viewpoints. They have a looking tower for a little extra cost. I didn’t find it to be worth the money, so I passed on that.

After that, we needed a place for the kids to run around and have fun. We found a place in Limerick called Tons of Fun. We thought it sounded like tons of fun, so we went there! It was on a school day, so we had the entire place to ourselves! The kids loved it and so did we! We ran wild for an hour, ate some snacks, and got back on the road.

Arriving in Sheep’s Head

A couple hours later, we found ourselves on the Sheep’s Head Peninsula! We stayed a week in the little village of Ahakista. All the villages on the peninsula were very small and adorable. There were big beautiful churches and we were surrounded by ocean view. We rented a big house with an amazing view and a trampoline!

One night, we went to the closest pub for dinner. It was called Arundel’s and if you have a little Frozen fan, you can imagine the excitement of my little Liberty! We were expecting another typical pub. Downstairs, it was a typical pub, but upstairs was quite a surprise! There were flowers and candles on each table, windows open to showcase the beautiful view of the bay, and a fancy menu. We ate good that night and if you ever get the chance to go, you have to get their creme brulé for dessert! Read my husband’s opinion of Ahakista right here on his website.

Sheep’s Head Lighthouse

We did the hike to the Sheep’s Head Lighthouse, which was at the tip of the peninsula we were staying on. It was a disappointing little dinky lighthouse, but the hike was fun! Although the hike was a little tough and the wind was fierce that day, my kids defeated it like warriors! And that’s what I kept calling them. My little warriors! Being completely honest, though…we totally bribed them with Kinder Eggs. We didn’t have to do piggy backs, we all made it back to the car alive, and they got their Kinder Eggs. It was a good day!

Cute town outside of Sheep’s Head: Bantry

We spent a couple days exploring the cute town of Bantry. We walked the streets and ate at a couple good little restaurants. We found a fun little playground for the kids. Bantry has an old water wheel that supplied them with power for the first time almost 200 years ago! It was neat to give my kids that history lesson.
